4 Signs a Partial Retirement Is Right for You

4 Signs a Partial Retirement Is Right for You4 Signs a Partial Retirement Is Right for You Countless workers look forward to retirement and the chance to live by their own schedules. But going from full-time work to absolutely no structure at all can be quite the shock to your finances. And mentally, it can take a toll, too. Thats why you may want to consider transitioning into partial retirement for a number of years before making it a full-time thing. Here are just a few indications that a partial retirement might work best for you.Since the typical retiree cant live off Social Security alone, the only way to remain financially secure in retirement is to go in with adequate savings. Unfortunately, most Americans arent close to reaching that status. The average household aged 56 to 61 has a median savings balance of just $17,000, according to the Economic Policy Institute. And even over a shorter retirement, thats not nearly enough to pay the bills, even when combi ned with the $16,320 a year the average Social Security beneficiary currently receives. If your savings arent in particularly great shape, a partial retirement could be the ideal solution. This way, youll continue earning some income to either pay the bills or add to your nest egg, but you wont be maintaining the same rigorous full-time work schedule you were formerly committed to. Partial retirement might also allow you to delay your Social Security benefits past full retirement age , thus boosting them by eight percent for each year you do so (up until age 70).The fact that seniors are living longer is no doubt a good thing, but it also means that retirees nest eggs are being stretched increasingly thin. If your health is notably good for your age, and you have a family history of living to an older age than most, then it pays to consider a partial retirement initially. This way, youll avoid tapping your savings to the same degree (if at all) during the first part of retirement, th us enabling your limited funds to last as long as you need them to.Even if your personal family history isnt particularly geared toward longevity, you should know that according to the Social Security Administration, one out of every four 65-year-olds today will live past the age of 90, while one in 10 will live past 95. In other words, your savings might need to last longer than expected, so if youre otherwise ready to retire, doing so on a partial basis at first will benefit you down the line. Many people hate their jobs and aim to leave them as soon as possible. But if you enjoy what you do and it brings you satisfaction, it pays to continue working in some capacity rather than stop abruptly. Its often the case that as we age, our ability to work long hours and endure lengthy commutes declines (either that, or our patience for those things wanes). If youre getting older and your job-related demands are too much to handle, but you otherwise like your work, then reducing your hour s could be the perfect solution. Some people need constant stimulation, while others may be content relaxing and enjoying extended periods of downtime. If you fall into the former camp, then a partial retirement might help you avoid the one ailment that seniors are disproportionately prone to depression. Its said that retirement increases the likelihood of suffering from clinical depression by 40 percent, so going from a structured work schedule to potentially having nothing to do and nowhere to be is a scary prospect. Of course, you can reduce your chances of falling victim to depression by mapping out a plan for how youll spend your days before you retire, but an even better bet is to ease into retirement slowly, and give yourself time to get used to the notion of not reporting to work for eight hours or more per day.Though many older workers prefer to dive into full-fledged retirement, theres no reason why you cant consider a middle ground. Partial retirement offers those for who m its an option the best of both worlds a chance to get some relief from the daily grind without having to completely give up that paycheck or structure. This article was originally published on The Motley Fool . Career advice lessons from departing PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi

Career advice lessons from departing PepsiCo CEO Indra NooyiCareer advice lessons from departing PepsiCo CEO Indra NooyiAfter 12 years at the helm of PepsiCo,Indra Nooyi, one of the most famous women of color to ever lead a Fortune 500 company, announced that she is stepping down as CEO. Twelve years is a long time, and Id like to do something different with my life, she told the Wall Street Journal about herbei decision to leave. This welchesnt a discussion out of emotion or anything of that sort.During her tenure, she not only took the maker of Mountain Dew, Gatorade and Doritos into international markets and healthier territory, she also became known for mentoring others who aspired to follow in her path. Here are some of the best pieces of advice shes given on careers that we can apply to our livesOn the realities of work-life balanceWhile some people advise us to have it all in our quest for self-improvement, Nooyi was more realistic, giving pragmatic advice on the compromises w omen make as they balance work, children and marriages I dont think women can have it all, she said at the 2014 Aspen Ideas Festival. We pretend we have it all.As an example of her coping mechanisms she created to deal with these compromises, Nooyi said she enlisted her receptionist to help her parent her daughters when they called her at PepsiCo. When her daughter Tyra called, the secretary would follow Nooyis instructions to get Nintendo access.Nooyi recalled how the conversation would go Have you finished your homework? Etc. I say this because thats what it takes. She goes through the questions and she says, Okay, you can play Nintendo half an hour. Then she leaves me a message. Tyra called at 5. This is the sequence of questions I went through. Ive given her permission. So its seamless parenting. But if you dont do that, Im serious, if you dont develop mechanisms with your secretaries, with the extended office, with everybody around you, it cannot work. You know, stay at home mo thering was a full-time job. Being a CEO for a company is three full-time jobs rolled into one. How can you do justice to all? You cant. The person who hurts the most through this whole thing is your spouse. Theres no question about it. You know, Raj always said, you know what, your list is PepsiCo, PepsiCo, PepsiCo, our two kids, your mom, and then at the bottom of the list is me. There are two ways to look at it. (laughing) You should be happy youre on the list. So dont complain. (laughing) He is on the list.On what she learned from Steve JobsWhen Nooyi got the PepsiCo CEO job in 2006, she reached out to Apple co-founder Steve Jobs for advice. In the two hours they talked, he advised her to take hands-on ownership of ideas if she wanted them to actually happen. When she told Jobs that PepsiCos design was a top priority for her, Jobs recommended her to get personally involved if she wanted that to be her legacyIf design is important to you, it has to report to you because its a new skill that you have to build in the company, Nooyi said Jobs told her.If you dont show CEO support for that function, dont even get started on that journey, she recalled him saying. On why learning never stopsTo be a leader, you have to be willing to keep up with the trends and think differently than your peers. That means going beyond the standard advice of consultants.Nooyi told a group of Stanford Business students that bosses who rely upon the traditional strategic planning cycle or consulting reports are doing their companies a big disservice. Our CEOs and leaders have to be lifelong students - not just students in the sense of attending courses or reading a book or two. Youve got to learn how to read widely, walk the market, look at trends in the marketplace, make connections that dont seem obvious, she said. Very often I think what happens is that we separate out the consumer out there from the consumer in us. We are the consumer. On how to combat the loneliness of leadershipFo r women who reach the highest pinnacles of power, the view from the top can be isolating. There are currently only 25 female CEOs in the SP 500 stock index, and two of them will be out by the end of this year. When you become a C.E.O. and youre a woman, you are looked at differently. You are held to a different standard, theres no question about it. Its not that youve become C.E.O., and now you get a hall pass. You dont. Nooyi said during a Freakonomics podcast interview. I think this group of women CEOs, all of us, are going through that right now. Hopefully, as the numbers get bigger - and I hope they do - nobodys looking at us as women CEOs but just as leaders of big enterprises. I hope that day comes sooner than later. Her advice to make it less lonely? Create your own personal board of directors to consult with in confidence about the decisions you make.In that same interview, Nooyi said that when she became a CEO, she started meeting up with other CEOs likeIBMsGinni Rometty and General ElectricsKen Chenaultfor advice.Youve got to create your own ecosystem, and your own kitchen cabinet, so you can sort of alleviate some of the loneliness without giving away any confidential information. I remember that we had a group of five CEOs that we would meet every quarter, Nooyi said. And the five of us would get together every quarter - we tried to get together every quarter - to talk about issues that were on our mind. And it was a good safe group for us to sort of bounce ideas off of each other. Wed talk about everything, ranging from big broad portfolio bets, to, how do you articulate an investor story? to how do you think about people development?

2 traits that help most successful people usually spell disaster for the rest

2 traits that help most successful people usually spell disaster for the rest2 traits that help most successful people usually spell disaster for the restSince I heard Daniel Kahneman speak at the World geschftsleben Forum this year, I havent stopped thinking about one particular point he raised.Kahneman is a Nobel Prize-winning psychologist and the author of the 2011 bestseller Thinking, Fast and Slow, in which he outlined a series of cognitive biases that affect our everyday decisions. At WBF, Kahneman spoke about a paradox of success You probably cant be wildly successful unless youre optimistic and overconfident about your chances. But generally speaking, optimism (the belief that youre less likely than others to experience bad events and mora likely to experience positive events) and overconfidence (an inflated sense of accuracy or ability in a specific area) are career saboteurs. Its the difference between, say, the Elon Musks and Jeff Bezoses of the world and the rest of us.To b e optimistic on average - its leid favorable, Kahneman said. But extreme success is impossible without optimism.Kahneman pointed to a 2007 paper published in the Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.Researchers looked at a group of inventors in Canada and found that above-average optimists who were advised not to pursue their project ended up spending 166% more money than below-average optimists did when they received the same advice. (The researchers found that overconfidence didnt have an effect on the inventors spending behavior, but that may have been because they didnt specifically measure the inventors confidence in their abilities.)Based on their findings, the researchers surmise that a high level of optimism may act to keep inventors going in the face of adversity - which is either a laudable or completely impractical behavior depending on your perspective. As Kahneman described it, the average inventor would have been better off financially heeding the negative advice and taking a more traditional job but the most successful inventors would not have.In some circumstances, overconfidence can be beneficialA more recent study provides some preliminary evidence that, at least among entrepreneurs, optimism can backfire. The study, which was published in the journal European Economic Review, found that above-average optimists who are self-employed earn 30% less than below-average optimists who are self-employed. Interestingly, however, the study also found that optimists who work for companies earn more than their more pessimistic peers.Still, there are some circumstances in which overconfidence in particular can work to your benefit. An article in the Harvard Business Review describes a study that found, at firms led by overconfident CEOs, there tends to be lower employee turnover and employees allocate a greater share of the assets in their retirement benefit plans to company stock. The authors write in The Harvard Business Review, At least in the corpora te world, there may be a bright side to overconfidence it can increase the commitment of other people to your venture. As for Kahneman, he called optimism the engine of capitalism. He said, When you have lots of people trying things against the odds, its not very good for most of them. Most of them will fail. But its very good for society at large to have a lot of people competing and a few of them succeed. This article first appeared on Business Insider.

Her brainchild, inLieu is the only social giving app that has combined a social network with an interesting and easy way to securely donate to any non-profit. You can think of it as Venmo, but instead of tagging your friend or paying them back, you send them a note and donation in their honor.Where the idea came from Terry wanted to change the narrative of how we show up for our friends and support them. Her philosophy and thought process was that no one really needs another bottle of vino, candle or gift certificate, considering there are more than $45 billion dollars sitting in unused gift cards. Instead, she thought making a difference in a cause important to your pal is a much more thoughtful - and useful - gesture. How its growing In the first nine months, inLieu donated $157K to 825 charities. They host 1.6 million different charities on their app, and 85% of all donation s made in the app are gifts to honor someone else, fulfilling her mission. In fact, user reviews even comment on how the app alone makes them more thoughtful. How she became successful Passion. I believe success has different meanings for different people. For me, I think success is something you are always striving to achieve, but never really fully attain. Success for me is not how much you have, but how you feel. I never want to stop learning, seeking, exploring and bettering myself. With anything we choose to do, there are challenges and bumps in the road and if you dont have passion then getting through those challenges are very difficult. Passion is the secret sauce, she shared.Whats next Their goal this year? The Story of How One Small Business Created a Powerful Talent Pipeline

The Story of How One Small Business Created a Powerful Talent PipelineThe Story of How One Small Business Created a Powerful Talent PipelineThe Story of How One Small Business Created a Powerful Talent Pipeline DeZubeFor most small companies, finding talent when the need arises is a huge challenge. Not so for Chartwell Agency, an integrated communications firm in Rockford, Illinois. The nine-person gruppe has developed a recruiting method that manages to keep candidates interestedeven when there are no available job openings. Chartwells team approach to hiring helps keep their talent pipeline stocked and at the ready. In fact, Chartwell now has a database of up to dozens of possible candidates. As a result, theyve been able to fill roles beinahe with employees who have the skills to get the job done with people whose personality fits their company culture. In our business, things change rapidly and we often need to fill a position quickly. Having folks in the pipeline allows us to alm ost immediately fill the role, says Chartwell President Rebecca Epperson. The companys three-step approach to vet candidates keeps the entire company focused on recruiting. Their methodology could be a great fit at your company as well.Start with a friendly meet and greetHeres how the process begins. When the company receives a resume, its deemed a fit or no-fit based on years of experience and qualifications. If it gets a thumbs up, a member of the management team schedules a get-to-know-you meeting or conversation with the candidate. This initial chat helps Chartwell learn more about the candidates capabilities and assess if theyre a good cultural fit. That fit is a two-way street between candidate and company. To help the candidate determine for themselves if theyre a match, the Chartwell team member paints a clear picture of what its like to work at the company a fast-paced environment where team camaraderie is big. They also point out the qualities that make Chartwell a unique pl ace to work. Why discuss this so early on in the process? Its a great way to landsee how individuals respond. Was the candidate engaged during the conversation? Were they enthused and interested? A lot can be determined over a cup of coffee or an informal conversation, Epperson says.If this initial meeting raises any yellow or red flags, the process ends then and there. If the candidate scored highbut there are no immediate openings at the companythe applicant is put into the companys pipeline (more about that later.)Another way that Chartwell decides who makes the cut is to ask candidates to take a test. They complete three strategic writing exercises that demonstrate their writing style, quality of work, strategic ideas and approach. Those who dont complete the workor dont complete it on timedont get into the pipeline. Then introduce top candidates to the teamApplicants who pass the writing test are then invited to interviewwith the Chartwell management team as part of a group inte rview. This conversation builds on the initial interview and goes into greater detail on expectations and the company culture. Targeted questions are asked to further assess the candidates strengths and weaknesses. But the interview process doesnt end there. The rest of the team conducts an offsite interview in a group setting in a more casual environmentusually over breakfast or lunch outside the office. While that may sound like overkill, the process allows the entire team to weigh in and assess if the candidate will be a good fit. If everyone feels comfortable with the person, and a position is open, Chartwell makes an offer.Because the hiring is conducted by everyone in our company, we all have a vested interest in hiring the right personand enabling their success once we bring them on, says Epperson.Keep the best candidates warmChartwell understands the importance of maintaining a talent pipeline, even when theres no immediate position open. In fact the company has successfully k ept individuals in their pipeline for over a year. The key is to stay in touch, build a relationship, and follow up when a position becomes available. The task of communicating with pipeline candidates is assigned to the team member that the position will report to. The company regularly reaches out with a quarterly update on future potential opportunities at the company to stoke interest. The results are worth the effortWhile this approach to hiring requires diligence from everyone on the team, Epperson wholly believes in her method. She says it works particularly well in a small business like theirs where every employee interacts with the entire staff in a single day. Skills we can developpersonalities we cannot, Epperson says.Another bonus to this method, adds Epperson It also makes the onboarding much easier and less intimidating to new employees as they have met the entire team already.Three key takeaways1. Assume every candidate for every job is pipeline potential. If theyre gre at but theyre not a fit for a current opening, start vetting them for fit so you can hire them quickly when an opening comes up.2. Find a vetting process that works for you. If theres a specific skill you know you always need, consider giving candidates some font of test to assess for it.3. Get employees involved. It helps them stay invested in the growth and success of the team. Be sure that your team members are trained in hiring best practices, especially the dos and donts of what to ask in the interviewas well as how to conduct a legal interview. What a talent pipeline can do for your companyThe story behind Chartwell Agencys hiring success shows how effective a talent pipeline can be. And theres an added benefitby involving everyone in the process, it can strengthen your company culture and employer brand. How can your company get started?
